Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., antiquary and bibliophile, of Middle Hill, near Broadway, Worcestershire, and of Thirlestane House, Cheltenham, was born in 1792 and died in 1872. He was a trustee of the British Museum and a Fellow of the Royal Society. he collected and purchased about sixty thousand manuscripts. His eldest daughter succeeded to the entailed estates, and married James Orchard Halliwell, who changed his name to Halliwell-Phillips. Sir Thomas Phillips could not trace his relationship to the Phillips family of Chipping Norton.
